GEARBOX TomTom for iPhone AS ANY REGULAR READER WILL ALREADY know, we’re big fans of Apple’s iPhone around here. With its slick design, slicker control system and on-the-go access to emails and social networking, it’s a must for the lazy journalist who wants to check out Facebook while looking like he’s actually work- ing. Ahem. And now, thanks to TomTom, the iPhone has become even more relevant to car nuts, as you can now incorporate all of TomTom’s mapping and navigation systems into your favourite mobile phone. The set-up costs from around €79.99 (if you just want Ireland and UK mapping) and the optional (and very useful) windscreen mounting is another €99 (approx). Simply down- load the TomTom app from the App Store and off you go, inputting destinations and finding locations just as you would on any TomTom navigation unit. That means you also get TomTom’s IQ routes technology, which uses clever software to work out that the most geo- graphically direct route to your destination might not neces- sarily be the quickest, depending on the time of day or the type of road. And it’s programmed to send you the route which will prove the most fuel efficient too, with TomTom claiming up to 20% savings on fuel consumption, depending on the circumstances. But where TomTom for iPhone really comes into its own is actually when you park up and start wandering around an unfamiliar town or city. Unlike the existing Maps application on the iPhone, TomTom can give you live direction finding on foot just as easily as it does in the car, and just as it does in the car, will automatically recalculate if you wander off course. It’s a brilliant addition to an already brilliant gadget and makes the iPhone pretty much a must-have for all motorists. You’ll find more information on www.tomtom.com
